Botulinum / Botox: Procedure
Purpose – Treatment with botulinum or botulinum toxin allows for an excellent and rapid result in smoothing facial expression lines, in particular the wrinkles of the upper third (region of the gabelle, forehead, crow’s feet, above the upper lip).
Treatment – Rather simple, and involves the injection of botulinum toxin (botulinum) directly into the area to be treated, through very small injections. The needles used are very thin, the pain during treatment is very slight.
Pre-treatment preparation – Check if you are in one of the cases in which surgery is not recommended: A pre-exisiting allergy to the toxin or preparation’s components _ Pregnancy or Breast feeding _ Presence of an infection or inflammation at the site of inoculation _ Current use of muscle relaxants _ Ongoing therapies with drugs that could interact with botulinum toxin _ Coaugulopathy, including anticoagulant therapy _ Poor patient compliance.
Post-treatment indications – None in particular but it is recommended to avoid physical activity, facial cleansing, massages and heat treatments such as sauna and Turkish baths for 24 hours.
Scarring results – None, as this treatment does not involve incisions.
Possible complications – The side effects of botulinum are generally minimal: swelling and small bruises at the injection site, but they disappear within a few days. Rarely, adjacent muscles can be involved in muscle relaxation causing a relative palpebral ptosis (a slightly less open eyelid than the other), a phenomenon that will reverse itself within a few weeks ( 2-5). Sometimes asymmetries of the eyebrow position may appear. This can easily be corrected with a touch-up with the same drug. Occasionally, headaches and pain may appear.
Recovery time – After infiltration it is important to not massage the treated areas for a few hours (minimum 24) and to not perform sports activities for 24 hours after the treatment.
