Hyaluronic Acid (filler)

corpo_viso_acido_ialuronicoThe Hyaluronic Acid filler is a non-surgical treatment, safe and effective, to remove face wrinkles, especially the nose-lip wrinkles (nasolabial folds), the forehead and the perioral wrinkles. It is also used for the correction of small imperfections, such as the outcomes of acne and depressed scars.
Fillers are all substances, both organic and non-organic, which are injected in the dermis in order to fill in wrinkles and depressions, reshaping lips and correcting flattened cheekbones.

Which one is the ideal filler?

It is difficult to define which one is the ideal filler; the variety of products available allows choosing amongst different options and solutions. The surgeon will evaluate carefully the patient's needs and expectations in order to choose the most suitable filler.

However, we can point out two main types of fillers: organic and permanent.
For safety reasons, the organic fillers are preferred to the permanent fillers, since they are completely resorbable. Our medical team does not use permanent fillers.
Organic fillers are biological molecules, which are completely resorbed by the skin dermis. The reabsorption time differs a lot from person to person. As an indication, the reabsorption time goes from six to twenty-four months and it is affected by other factors, like smoking, alcohol, sun exposure (photo-damage) and a stressful lifestyle.
Fillers are mainly used for the face. One of the most known is collagen, but, lately, the most used is hyaluronic acid. It does not require a tolerance test and, therefore, it can be injected immediately. It is a substance that is naturally occurring in our skin dermis. Furthermore, being an essential component of the skin structure, it improves the hydration of the skin tissue.
With aging, the quality of the hyaluronic acid in the skin dermis deteriorates, and its quantity decreases, causing an alteration of the skin dermis itself. The first signs are small wrinkles, which then become real wrinkles; as a consequence, the cheeks, the cheekbones and the lips lose volume. The filler fills in the wrinkles, adds volume and, consequently, improves the face contours.

The procedure

The filler injection is not so painful, but the surgeon can suggest a local anesthesia with numbic anesthetic cream, in order to make the treatment more comfortable.

Preoperative Preparation

It is recommended not to combine the hyaluronic acid treatment with other treatments like laser, deep chemical peeling or dermabrasion.
The patient should not take aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs for at least three days before the treatment.

After the procedure

For two weeks after the treatment, it is recommended to avoid prolonged exposure to the cold (temperatures below 0°C), to the sun and to heat sources (UV, sauna, Turkish Bath).

Possible complications

Right after your treatment, the area may be red, swollen and, in some rare cases, ecchymosis might appear (bruises).
This tenderness should go away within a few days and can be easily camouflaged.
There are some conditions that serves as a reason to withhold the treatment (contraindications): autoimmune diseases, allergies, known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid, tendency to develop hypertrophic scars, inflammatory problems or infections (acne, herpes) in the areas to be treated, as well as previous treatments, especially with permanent fillers.

Recovery time (back to social life)

The aesthetical result is immediate and very natural and it is possible to go back to social life straightaway.
